The incident, the latest case of mob justice in the state, took place at Hingoli village in Darbhnaga district on Tuesday but came to the knowledge of the police after video footage went viral.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the case.

Reports said staff from the electricity department were fitting power connections in the village when one of their mobile phones went missing.

Subsequently, the utility employee made a call on his number and a man on the other end answered the call.

The caller identified the alleged thief and later caught him but he got angry when he failed to get his phone back.

Police acted when someone uploaded the video on social media, which soon went viral.

In the video, the crane is seen lifting the alleged thief higher in the air as the mob watch.
