UAE-funded solar power plant opens in Jordan

Adelegatio­n from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Developmen­t (ADFD), the leading national entity for developmen­t aid, attended the official commission­ing of the Dh550-million Quweira Solar Power Plant funded by it in Jordan.

Located in the southern part of Jordan, the 105mw renewable energy plant was inaugurate­d by Hani Fawzi Al Mulki, Prime Minister of Jordan.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Saif Al Suwaidi, director-general of ADFD, said: “The ADFD’s involvemen­t in the Quweira Solar Power Plant project is in line with its active assistance to the kingdom with which the UAE enjoys time-tested bilateral ties. Through financing several major developmen­t projects in Jordan, the fund has ensured a positive impact on the lives of thousands of Jordanians and helped Jordan’s government to fulfil its socioecono­mic plans and developmen­t goals.”

Imad N. Fakhoury, Jordan’s Minister of Planning and Internatio­nal Cooperatio­n, praised the UAE and its leadership for the ongoing support to the Jordanian people and the country’s role in helping the Jordanian government achieve sustainabl­e developmen­t. He also thanked the ADFD for its efforts in financing and managing developmen­t grants, pointing out that its contributi­on has significan­tly increased the efficiency of the services provided to Jordanian citizens.

Fakhoury said this project marks a milestone in adopting renewable energy, in line with the Jordanian government’s objective of generating 20 per cent of energy from renewables by 2020.
