The no fee hike news was welcomed by residents, especially across social media in the UAE. Readers commented on the Gulf News Facebook page and praised the decision.

Heather Joy Wright wrote: “This is indeed a wise decision as [fees] were already proving to be too expensive for many.”

Ahmad Mumtaz posted: “This is great. [These leaders] lead from the front like captains.”

Dubai resident Monisha Krishna, whose youngest daughter is in school, told Gulf News that this decision is a positive change. She said: “With costs increasing in general, it is a welcome move. My daughter is moving into senior school so it is nice to not have to worry about a fee hike.”

Working mother Priya Chellani said: “Since schools follow the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) system, they are allowed to increase the fees annually. However, this new decision is a relief for parents as it will give them time to adjust to Value Added Tax (VAT), which was introduced in the beginning of this year.”

On our Twitter handle @ gulf_news, the story was retweeted and liked by many users.

S. Hinduja, who has already paid the term fees for her son’s school, wondered if the new rule would apply to her scenario as well.

Aravind Kumar’s three-anda-half-year-old son is starting school in September. He said: “This has come at the right time, as fuel prices and [other things] have gone up recently. We can budget more and since the value of the rupee is fluctuating, I can send more money back home to India.”

While social media comments were full of praise for Dubai’s decision, a lot of people raised questions about whether schools in other emirates would follow suit.
