Two iftars to try in the UAE

- By Yousra Zaki, Guides Deputy Editor

As someone who probably has animal protein every single day in most of my meals, I was looking forward to trying a vegan iftar for the first time. I wanted to eat light and nutritious food, but I was slightly worried about getting up feeling hungry. Guess what? Vegan food is filling and the best part is, it won’t give you a food coma.

The iftar menu began with me ending the fast in a traditional way, with an organic date and a cold press organic mint and watermelon juice, which when I read the label, was packed with enzymes and minerals that will nourish your body. The starter was a fantastic turmeric hummus served on raw dehydrated veggie pulp crackers. At first, I couldn’t figure out what those crackers were because they tasted so good, and then I realised, I was eating vegetables as a replacement for toast.

For the main course, we had the option of having either the vegan tacos or a comforting chilli with guacamole and pico de gallo. I loved how they tasted.

To my surprise, I was already starting to get full, but I knew dessert was up next and could never pass up a chance to end my meal with something sweet. We were served a rose and pistachio tiramisu that was made with completely vegan ingredients and no added sugar. It’s safe to say that I was patting myself on the back for eating so clean, not harming any animals during my iftar and getting up feeling so incredibly light.

I am now a believer of their philosophy that food should be good for you, good for the planet, and delicious.
