Doctor defiant after brother shot

Aday after his brother was shot at by unidentifi­ed assailants in Uttar Pradesh (UP), controvers­ial doctor Kafeel Khan, prime accused in the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) hospital case involving the death of 63 infants, yesterday said he would “not bend.”

Kashif Jameel, 34, brother of Dr Khan, was shot at late on Sunday night in the Durgabadi area by two unidentifi­ed assailants on a motorcycle. He was riding on his scooty when the incident happened.

Reacting to the news, suspended paediatric­ian Dr Khan tweeted, “my brother has been shot at. I always knew they would try to kill us. Allah rahem kare [May God show mercy]. I am not going to bend.”

Jameel suffered bullet injuries on his neck, arm and chin.

Out of danger

Yesterday, Dr Khan told journalist­s his brother was out of danger.

“The bullets have been removed from my brother Kashif’s body, and the operation has been successful. He is currently in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Three bullets were shot at him in order to kill him. Who has fired, we do not know. But it was 500 metres from Gorakhnath Temple, where Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was staying,” he said.

The police have registered a case against unknown persons and the matter is being investigat­ed, officials announced.

“My brother is recovering now. Police are waiting for his health to improve so he can tell what actually happened,” Dr Khan said.

He however alleged police wasted three hours in deciding which hospital his brother should be referred to for surgery.

On April 25, Dr Khan was released on bail after eight months in jail. As many as 63 infants died at BRD hospital within a week in August, 2017.
