1.4m tonnes of waste collected in Abu Dhabi
6,376.90 tonnes of waste on average generated per day in emirate in first half of year, Tadweer says
The Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) collected more than a million tonnes of waste from across Abu Dhabi in the first half of the year, a statement from the centre said yesterday.
A total of 1.14 million tonnes of waste was collected after an average of 6,376.90 tonnes of waste was generated per day in the emirate.
Tadweer collected 1.09 million tonnes of waste in the emirate in the first half of last year.
The waste included municipal solid waste, green waste (recyclable) and bulky items from residential areas, animals from farms and slaughterhouses and low volume demolition and construction waste.
The waste collected included 460,322.16 tonnes of municipal solid waste, 267,716.61 tonnes of green waste from residential areas and farms and 58,754.99 tonnes of bulky waste.
Dr Salem Al Kaabi, acting general manager of Tadweer, said: “Rapid population growth and unprecedented urbanisation in the emirate have led to a dramatic increase in consumption and waste production.”
Al Kaabi urged community members to adopt a pro-environmental mindset and abstain from random waste disposal.
Waste management
“We implement a comprehensive waste management strategy that focuses on reducing waste and minimising waste disposal and treatment costs. By turning waste into economically important resources and offering waste management services. Tadweer supports Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development agenda and contributes to achieving the goals outlined in the Abu Dhabi 2030 plan.”
The centre collected 9.6 million tonnes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in 2016 and 8.4 million tonnes in 2015.
Al Kaabi added: “We have implemented several innovative projects such as Abu Dhabi’s first civic amenity for recyclable materials with the provision of other types of recycling centres in the city.”
