FAMOUS MEXICAN SCULPTURE BY MARIN ON DISPLAY AT MANARAT AL SAADIYAT
Representing friendships that go beyond borders and continents, a famed sculpture by Mexican artist Jorge Marin — ‘Wings of Mexico’ — was unveiled in Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening.
Made of gold and bronze wings, the artwork will be on display at Abu Dhabi’s cultural hub of Manarat Al Saadiyat until October 31, with the sculpture’s installation coming as part of a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi (DCT-Abu Dhabi) and the Mexican embassy.
Well-known
“The Wings of Mexico is a very well known piece of artwork that has been displayed in many cities and countries around the world, and so for the Mexican embassy it was very important for us to bring this sculpture to the amazing city of Abu Dhabi,” said Francisca Elizabeth Mendez Escobar, Mexico’s ambassador to the UAE.
“The artwork represents tolerance, freedom, movement and interaction with people of different cultures,” she added.
Ambassador Escobar said she was keen to enhance cultural ties between the UAE and
Mexico.
“Culture is a great way to build bridges between people, and so we believe that encouraging cross-cultural exchanges with the UAE and its people is a very good thing to pursue.
“We want the people of Mexico and the UAE to learn about one another, and to understand each other better,” she added.
Saif Saeed Ghobash, undersecretary of the DCT-Abu Dhabi, praised the installation of the Wings of Mexico in Abu Dhabi and spoke positively on what the sculpture represents.
“Jorge Marin’s incredible piece of art represents an ethos that resonates fully with Emirati society. The Wings of Mexico represents soaring ambition, limitless optimism and achievement, as well as connectivity and communication between cultures.
“Promoting and encouraging the exchange of cultural dialogue with the rest of the world is one of the key mandates of the DCT-Abu Dhabi — especially in the Year of Zayed,” he added.
