The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is a tool that meteorologists use to measure the intensity of hurricanes in a range of 1-5, with 1 being the lowest. The category gives an estimate of the potential property damage and flooding expected along the coast from a hurricane landfall. Wind speed is the determining factor in the scale.
