Social media debate

- — Compiled by Huda Tabrez/Community Web Editor

Social media users debated what it meant to be a feminist and whether believing in equal rights for all required a label.

Karen Brady: Feminism... What does it mean to you? As a 2nd wave feminist. I am certain about what it means to me. For me, feminism has been the proactive opposition to patriarchy and sexist oppression. It is my belief to fight for women’s full participation in society, our equal access to the same rights, privileges, pay and status that men have historically enjoyed. There is much more to aim for still. But anything less is just not acceptable to me.

@justanactivistt: Men have always had it easier to get to the top. Let’s fight for our women, so they get the same opportunities to succeed.

@m_nilu: Wondering why I don’t call myself a feminist? Because feminism is about gender equality and to support gender equality, you don’t really need to put a label on yourself or join a cult of personality. Stand up for what you believe and don’t cause harm to others. You’ll do fine.
