Sports and sportsmanship
The US Open Women’s Final saw a young, tenacious, Naomi Osaka emerging victorious, winning her debut Grand Slam for Japan (“Naomi Osaka Beats Serena Williams in a joyless US Open final”, Gulf News, September 10). It was a proud moment for her personally, as well as for Japan, but the final was shocking and unfortunate. It was sad to see the 23 times Grand Slam champion who is regarded as one of the most iconic stars of sports, Serena Williams’ strange and controversial on-court behaviour.
Her ranting, racket abuse, screaming and accusing the chair referee, completely overshadowed
Osaka’s winning joy. She not only ruined Osaka’s moment but also earned disrespect from millions of fans. The booing and jeers from the crowd, though not meant for the winner, must have been so painful and agonising for Osaka. It is time Serena knew that good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of the game and it should be learnt and practised diligently, especially in sticky situations. Good athletes need not be reprimanded for their unruly and unsavoury behaviour. They are the inspirations for people and need to lead by setting good examples.
