5 social media TOP trends of the week

-

Netizens raised social issues ranging from the dismissal of an economist from Pakistan’s Economic Advisory Council to justice for a nun who was raped in Kerala, India. Tennis star Serena Williams engaging in a heated argument with a referee was also widely discussed.

1. Economist dismissed

An economist belonging to the Ahmadiyya religious minority was dismissed from Pakistan’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC) and social media users were outraged. Hundreds of posts supporting the MIT-educated professor rolled in. Many netizens questioned Imran Khan’s tactics of creating a ‘Naya Pakistan’ (new Pakistan) that he has promised?

@bkhan04;

One more wicket down. Another blow to Imran Khan’s irrational decisions and supporting religious bigotry and extremism. Thank you Imran Rasul for standing by principals and Atif Mian.

2. Modinomics

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was trolled after they posted a graph to show “The truth of hike” in petrol and diesel prices. The graph had aimed to indicate the difference in the percentage of the fuel price hike, compared to the years when the Indian National Congress was in power. However, many Twitter users found it misleading and incorrect.

If you’re going to provide data, please provide complete data along with prevailing international prices and excise duties. Not in graph form (where you can manipulate viewers minds) but in tabular form, year on year data.

3. Pakistan dams

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan asked overseas Pakistanis to contribute to a fund dedicated to building the Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand dams to combat the massive water shortage the country is facing and large contributions rolled in. Prominent media personalities, politicians and military personnel pledged to and presented their donations.

@HamidMirPAK:

Dam fund moving fast: I contributed one million rupees (Dh 29853) in dam fund and @sufisal surprised us with the announcement of 100,000 USD (Dh 367,319) for the fund then directors of GNN Zulqarnain Nawaz Chattha and Zubair Nawaz Chattha announced 5 crores for dam fund.

4. Serena Williams

In the middle of her US Open final against Naomi Osaka, tennis superstar Serena Williams slammed her racket and engaged in a heated conversation with the tournament referee. The incident sparked debates about gender bias, also whether William’s actions were justified and if she deserved the penalties she was facing.

@Mandar_94:

Don’t get why the Serena Williams thing made its way to sexism. She misbehaved on court and was rightfully penalised for it. There is simply no other theory possible there.

5. Kerala nun case

A Kerala nun in her late 40s alleged that she was raped, 13 times between 2014 to 2016 by Bishop Franco Mullakal of the Jalandhar diocese. Social media users expressed their solidarity with her and demanded justice against the accused. Whereas, Kerala politician PC George was under fire for his offensive remarks against the nun.

@dvchandrasekar:

It is a very sorry state of affairs in Kerala nun’s rape allegation case where the organisation and insensitive politicians are joining hands to defame her character.
