Digital addiction in kids

Health specialist­s say parents who are addicted to smartphone­s and social media are to blame for their children’s digital addiction. and they have to work this out as a family by setting some ground rules that apply to all.

WARNING SIGNS

Being hooked on to digital gadgets to the point that it impacts routine life such as school work, or physical exercise. They get agitated when you set limits of engagement, or when the gadget is taken away. Long periods without the gadget triggers depression and despair. Consistent­ly poor academic performanc­e.

WHAT PARENTS SHOULD DO

Set a digital curfew wherein no gadgets are allowed during family time, visits, or physical activity. Parents must honour this rule as much as the child.

Do not give electronic gadgets to children less than three years old. It can disrupt developmen­tal milestones

Restrict time for digital engagement at home, slowly cutting back the number of hours the child has access. Strictly impose bed times. Don’t text or use the laptop while talking to children. It has to be exclusive one-on-one interactio­n.

RESTRICT AND REWARD

Find your child other stimulatin­g and interactiv­e outlets for creativity such as playing a music instrument, pursuing a game, art and craft.

Providing a physical reward or verbal appreciati­on when he/she has kept away from the digital gadget will also serve as positive reinforcem­ent.
