Former French president Francois Hollande has commented that it was the Indian government that had proposed Reliance Defence as the partner for the Rs580 billion (Dh29.74 billion) Rafale deal. The Congress has alleged that the cost of each aircraft is three times more than what the previous UPA government had negotiated with France in 2012. Prime Minister Modi had announced the procurement of 36 Rafale jets after holding talks with the then French president Hollande on April 10, 2015, in Paris.
