Women more prone to urinary problems

- Staff Report

Women are more prone to getting kidney stones and urinary problems, and women in the UAE are no exception, especially during the hot weather. If left untreated, these conditions can be life-threatening.

“When the heat is at its peak, most people experience dehydration, which can affect the vital organs of the body as kidneys and the urinary tract,” said Dr Ahmad Al Tunji, urology specialist at Emirates Hospital — Day Surgery and Medical Centre, Motor City.

Though kidney stones form due to genetic conditions, diet and lifestyle practices also contribute to it.

“We ask people to consume eat more calcium-rich food, less sodium, eat less animal protein and limit the intake of coffee, tea and cola,” added Dr Tunji.

Another common condition that affects most women in the UAE during high temperatures is urinary tract infection (UTI), a bacterial condition.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in five women get a UTI at some point in her life.

Dr Tunji urged residents to not delay seeking early medical advice when experiencing urinary problems, as the infection could worsen if not treated early.
