star Wang Qiang’s dream run at the Wuhan Open in China ended in heartbreak yesterday as an injury forced her to retire from the semi-final, with Anett Kontaveit leading 6-2, 2-1.
Roared on by adoring home fans, Wang — topranked in China — had already made history by becoming the first local player to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament with an impressive march to the last four that included an upset of world number seven Karolina Pliskova. Kontaveit is aiming to finish the season strongly. (AFP)
