Talking about Australians’ delay in taking the new ball, Sohail said: “At one stage, the seam of the ball was scruffed up and the ball even went soft. Even if you middle the ball with the bat, it was not going to cross the inner circle. I had thought that once they take the new ball then runs will come and it happened.”
Shafiq once stepped out to hit Lyon over the sightscreen to steer Pakistan past the 300 run mark in the 113th over. The pair recorded their half century partnership and by lunch Pakistan were 329 for four.
Australia took the new ball after lunch for the 120th over but it refused to bring any luck for the Australian bowlers.
Shafiq was the first to reach his half-century through a cracking boundary to extra cover.
