Gore is not my cup of tea
Idon’t like horror and I don’t think it has anything to do with intelligence. It is a personal choice. At the end of the day, some people like jump scares and watch films or go to horror houses. They like the adrenaline rush that they get out of it. It is not really a negative experience for them, even though they are experiencing the fear and stress. They like the few moments adrenal rush just like some people like prolonged adrenal rushes and jump off a cliff or do free diving.
Before the 1980s, there were good horror movies. To me, horror is not just about jump scares and audio effects. The first Exorcist or The Evil Dead had good stories. Today, if you look at The Conjuring series, it is the only one I like, because it has a good story as well as character development. Then there are movies like Grudge — we don’t know what we are watching. Similarly, a lot of people love Paranormal Activity, but I wonder, “Why am I watching it?” The director just uses a vouyeristic technique and jump scares to engage the audience.
