Marina to get elevated footbridge

65-metre crossing that can handle 4,000 people per hour will be ready by December 2019

- Staff Report

One of Dubai Marina’s busiest traffic junctions is all set to get a multidirection elevated walkway, easing pedestrian movements between Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) and other parts of the densely populated area.

Part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) pedestrian safety measures that will see three new footbridges built by the end of next year, the 65-metre Marina walkway will help 4,000 people cross the busy junction on King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Street.

The Marina walkway will boast a unique design with four escalators linking the four sides of the intersection.

“Constructing a footbridge of this magnitude at the Marina has been prompted by a host of considerations. The junction is used by about 2,300 people and 2,000 vehicles during peak hours. More than 1,000 people cross the junction to head to the JBR during weekends,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA.

Dubai Tram also crosses the intersection every six minutes.

Al Tayer said the design of the bridge facade is inspired by the urban nature of the area with a shape and colour that fit well with the surrounding buildings.

“The bridge will enable pedestrians to move freely between the four sides of the junction. It extends 65 metres, can accommodate 4,000 people per hour, and is expected to be ready in December 2019,” said Al Tayer.
