On account of my teacher

- MY ROLE MODEL

When I got a B in Accounting for my IGCSEs, I was devastated. I had A*s and As in all my other subjects, but my mind kept focusing on that one B. However, I still took Accounting for my AS Levels, aspiring to become a commerce teacher in future.

Unfortunately, I ended up scoring 34/75 in my first assessment. On the verge of tears, I walked up to my teacher Ms Rency John and asked her the procedure for dropping Accounting and taking another subject instead. She explained the procedure but told me to think with a cool head. My marks were higher than the average grade of the class and she said, “I would not want such a good student to drop out of my class.” Reluctantly, I ended up doing the subject for the rest of the year. In my boards for 12th, I ended up scoring an A — the highest grade. I cried tears of joy. At that moment, I decided that when I’m a teacher, I would try my hardest to be as encouraging and amazing as she was. For me, my Accounting teacher is the only reason why my balance sheets tally. She taught me five things that I will never forget:

1 Never, ever, give up on your students, even if they have given up on themselves.

2 Put your heart and soul into teaching. My teacher sacrificed her afternoons and weekends, just to complete the overflowing portion.

3 Tell your student that they have done amazingly well, even if you see the slightest improvement.

4 Always come to class looking happy.

5 Check up on the mental health of students.
