UAE volunteers help build school in Nepal

Dubai Cares programme to help provide primary education to 150 village children

- Staff Report

Volunteers from the UAE recently helped build the foundation of a new primary school in Nepal as part of Dubai Cares’ Volunteer Globally programme.

Joining hands with the local community, 14 volunteers helped in the manual labour for building the school, which will serve 150 children in Basuati village, which does not have a school and is still recovering from the devastating 2015 earthquake.

The school, which is funded by Amal Education Limited led by UAE businessman Ahmad Bin Byat, is expected to be ready in 2019.

The UAE-based volunteers, who are from nine countries, participated in digging, lifting, pumping water, mixing concrete, reinforcing steel bars, and making and laying bricks.

They also took part in cultural education workshops that allowed them to immerse themselves within the local community.

It is estimated that almost one in four primary school-age children are out of school in Nepal. The earthquake in 2015 forced many children out of school due to damaged infrastructure or families sending their children to work instead.
