Apen that identifies cancer cells and a ring that ‘reads’ by pointing a finger at words were among scores of futuristic solutions unveiled at the Global Grad Show being held as part of Dubai Design Week yesterday.

The show’s fourth edition ends on Saturday and is the key event at Dubai Design Week under way at Dubai Design District (d3). Around 150 prototypes from some 100 universities from around the world are on display at the free-toattend show in building 6 at d3.

The winner of the show will be announced today, bagging a $10,000 (Dh36,700) prize.

Show director Brendan McGetrick told Gulf News that some of the exhibits could be scaled up into production. The projects were shortlisted from over 1,000 entries — the largest number to date.

McGetrick said simplicity, functionality and user empathy are the hallmarks of “design at its best”, besides the raw science and technology that goes into a prototype.

Meanwhile, Shaikha Latifa Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, inaugurated the sixth edition of Downtown Design, which features 175 exhibitors, including 40 regional designers. ■ ■
