From Sunday, tourists visiting the UAE will be able to claim a refund on the tax they pay while shopping.

So here’s how you can get your five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) back. First, you can only claim a refund if you live outside the GCC. When you’re shopping around the UAE, look for stores with the Tax Refund sign. Next, once you’ve made your purchase, the retailer will ask to see proof that you are over 18.

After recording your personal details and the purchase information, the retailer will issue the required digital documents for you to claim refund. Once at the airport, follow the signs for Tax Free Refunds and look for the staff who will validate your purchases.

A few rules: You must claim your refund within 90 days from the purchase date, and you can’t consume half of it while in the UAE and still claim a refund on it. So no refunds on half-eaten chocolate boxes.

You can’t claim a refund on motor vehicles, boats and aircraft, and you must accompany your purchases when they leave the UAE, ruling out refunds on goods shipped home separately.
