The birth of Palestine

1988 - The independent State of Palestine was proclaimed in Algiers. Palestine Liberation Organisation Chairman Yasser Arafat, with his hand raised in victory, solemnly read the historic declaration. It marked the climax of a struggle and rewarded the sacrifices of successive generations. As an Arab state and as an integral part of the Arab world, it affirmed commitments to the Arab League and UN Charters.
