The strongest model of government
Iam a UK citizen currently visiting the UAE. I read an article about Brexit and felt compelled to write you this email (“Brexit has undermined Good Friday agreement: Irish premier”, Gulf News, November 4). I voted for the UK to remain in the referendum in 2016, but I lost. Over 17.4 million people voted for the UK to leave and this was a great example of democracy. In Britain, we believe it is the sovereign right of the people to decide our future, not the elite political classes. Whatever challenges Brexit poses, the British people have made the decision, and as such, will make a success of the future. Democracy will always succeed in the long term. As someone who voted for the UK to remain in the European Union, I now fully embrace the democratic will of my fellow British citizens. Our government is currently negotiating a pragmatic exit from the EU and has been very reasonable in negotiations so far. Should the EU take an unreasonable approach and force a ‘No deal’, then the UK will ensure that all contingencies will be in place for such an occurrence. I am very hopeful.
