After two days of wedding ceremonies at Lake Como in Italy that were shrouded in secrecy, Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh finally unveiled their first look as a married couple to the public on Thursday, hours after wrapping up their second ceremony. Both Padukone and Singh shared two images — one each from their four-hour-long ceremony according to Konkani traditions on the first day and a North Indian style marriage that took place on day two.
Fans, who had been eagerly waiting for the couple to reveal their wedding pictures, took to social media within minutes to trend #DeepVeer a second day in a row.
WEDDING LOOK
Padukone was dressed in Sabyasachi Mukherjee ensembles on both days, with outfits rooted in tradition as she chose red and gold as her primary colours for her wedding. The groom was also dressed in Sabyasachi for both events, colour coordinating with Padukone the couple had a Padukone’s outfit had a blessing in Sanskrit embellished.
on day two.
On Wednesday, the couple hosted the first of two weddings, a traditional Konkani South Indian ceremony. For this day, Singh wore traditional attire, an ivory and gold veshti (a cloth wrapped around the waist), a matching tunic and an angavastram or stole.
The bride was dressed in a silk red and gold saree that was heavily embellished and matched with heavy Kundan jewellery — again House of Sabyasachi. Padukone’s jewellery comprised a traditional mathapati or a head band, matched with heavy earrings, a choker Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s first wedding ceremony. and layered necklace. In her hands, the actress is seen holding a gift that traditionally comes from the groom’s family, a tray with an embroidered dupatta that would have been used for the Anand Karaj wedding ceremony that took place on day two.
This North Indian style wedding, celebrated by Sikhs and Sindhis, saw Padukone covering her head with an ornate dupatta that had a hidden message in Sanskrit: The words ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhavah’ (May you have eternal luck) embroidered. Meanwhile. Singh colour-coordinated red and gold sherwani (traditional Indian suit).
Interestingly, Thursday was also the fifth anniversary of the film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, which marked the start of the couple’s love story.
FAN FRENZY
Fans had been stalking the internet for two days, waiting for the first glimpse of the couple. In a matter of 10 minutes of sharing the first pictures at around 6.30pm UAE time on Instagram, the couple jointly garnered over 400,000 ‘likes’.
The celebrity couple’s Bollywood friends Farah Khan, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra were among the first to extend congratulatory messages.
Amit, a cousin of Padukone, who is the daughter of badminton ace Prakash Padukone, said it has been a “magical week”. “Fairytale union of the two most kind, beautiful souls. Ranveer, welcome to the family! You’ve dethroned me as filmiest, but I’ll cope. Deepika, never seen you happier; you deserve no less,” he tweeted.
MEDIA BLACKOUT
Unlike most celebrity weddings which keep fans engrossed in social media updates, the ‘no pictures, no phones, no drones policy’ of the actors’ destination wedding left fans yearning for a glimpse of the couple.
Apart from some long, wide-angle shots and hazy videos of the revelry, the wedding was kept under wraps. With a guest list of around 40, the couple chose Northern Italy’s Lombardy region for the privacy it offered. Singh and Padukone were successful in hiding themselves from onlookers, using umbrellas. Mobile phones were not allowed outside rooms and boats patrolled the lake for drones as part of the three-level security plan.
Called ‘DeepVeer’ by their fans, Padukone had a religious ceremony at her Bengaluru residence while Singh had a haldi function at his Mumbai home. Padukone and Singh exchanged rings on Tuesday evening in Italy, followed by a mehendi or henna function the next day and a sangeet music party.
The couple will have a reception in Bengaluru and Mumbai on November 21 and 28 respectively. And on December 1, there will be a celebration with the film fraternity. They have urged guests to send gifts in the form of a donation to Padukone’s Live Love Laugh Foundation, which spreads awareness of mental health. (With inputs from IANS)
