‘We just can’t go on like this’

-

British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government is in disarray over Brexit but there is no majority in parliament for damaging the economy by leaving the EU without a deal, the opposition Labour Party’s finance minister-in-waiting said yesterday.

“We just can’t go on like this,” John McDonnell, 67, said in a speech in London. “We just cannot go on with this instability, uncertainty that there is in government, day by day and sometimes hour by hour.”

McDonnell, who along with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn hopes to win power to build socialism in the world’s fifth largest economy, said there was not a majority in parliament for either May’s deal or for leaving the European Union without a deal. There are several routes to power for Labour. McDonnell said the Brexit crisis made it hard to predict the exact path to Downing Street.
