What’s new in the podcast world

Iconic ‘2 Dope Queens’ says goodbye and Dan Taberski returns with a new show

- — Shyama Krishna Kumar is a copy editor by day and a genre queen by night. Comics, podcasts and superhero TV shows are just some of her current obsessions.

It’s the end of an era. For those who have closely followed the podcast scene in recent years and especially for those who have been looking for diverse voices to follow on the internet, Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson have been household names. And now, after three years of rib-tickling and eye-opening shows, the 2 Dope Queens are shutting shop and moving on.

“Hi, boo boos,” reads a letter from the girls to their fans. “We’ve got some big news, so you might want to sit back like Wendy Williams about to serve the tea .... In the words of Boyz II Men, it’s the ‘end of the road.’”

“Our show started in a hot basement in Brooklyn and now we’re selling out theatres across the country. We could not have done it without you,” the two wrote in their letter.

“The podcast was created as a space for female, POC and LGBTQ performers to shine (and for Phoebe to teach you all about why Bono is, in fact, great). We — and by we, we mean YOU — showed the world that people want and need to hear more diverse voices.”

For their final episode, aired on November 14, the two managed to rope in Michelle Obama, the US’ former First Lady, and they chat about her new memoir Becoming, her hair journey, her struggle with the ‘Angry Black Female’ stereotype, and how to raise bold women.

MAGICAL WORLD

Williams, who hails from The Daily Show, also debuted as Professor Eulalie (Lally) Hicks of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,

now showing in the UAE. While she plays a minor role in this film, fans will catch her in her “full glory”, confirmed author JK Rowling herself.

Robinson, who comes from The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore and isa New York Times best-selling author, will next appear on the big screen in What Men

Want. Robinson also hosts the WNYC Studios podcast Sooo Many White Guys.

However, it’s not really the end of dope content. The next round of 2 Dope

Queens specials will air in 2019 on HBO. The first four aired in February, so for those of you aren’t fully caught up, there’s a whole lot out there.
