US formally reviews antitrust allegations against Opec
Earlier moves to fix similar charges against oil grouping never made headway
TAntitrust Act of 1890, the law used more than a century ago to break up the oil empire of John Rockefeller. A similar Senate bill hasn’t seen any action yet. Although past presidents have threatened to use their veto power to prevent similar bills from becoming law, President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked the grouping over high prices. Opec is scheduled to meet next month in Vienna amid a collapse in oil prices that’s spurred calls for the group to curb output in 2019. Saudi Arabia has already signalled it supports a deep cut and as a first step will reduce its shipments by 500,000 barrels a day in December.
