Food Security
The National Strategy for Food Security aims to develop a comprehensive system based on sustainable food production through modern technologies. It will help enhance local production, develop international partnerships to diversify food sources, reduce food wastage and promote policies that contribute to improving nutrition. Mariam Al Muhairi, UAE Minister of State for Food Security, said the government aims to make the UAE the world’s best in the World Food Security Index by 2051, and among the top ten countries by 2021. The National Strategy for Food Security includes 38 short and long-term key initiatives within the 2051 Vision and 2021 Agenda, through five strategic directions focused on facilitating the global food trade, diversifying food import sources and identifying alternative supply schemes covering three to five sources for each major food category — given that the value of imports of food products last year amounted to Dh53 billion, exports Dh10 billion, and re-exports Dh8.5 billion.
