Aseries of legislations, policies and initiatives to enhance the role of women and raise the rates of their participation and representation locally, regionally and internationally were approved yesterday.

At a special Cabinet session held at the headquarters of the General Women’s Union, chaired by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Cabinet adopted a new package of national legislation, policies and initiatives for Emirati women.

The new package is based on legislation and policies; services and international representation. It includes policies, legislation and initiatives that support the advancement of women as an active partner in society and a cornerstone of its success.

The Cabinet yesterday approved a slew of legislations, policies and initiatives to enhance the role of Emirati women in society.

At a special session held at the headquarters of the General Women’s Union (GWU), chaired by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Cabinet adopted a package based on three main themes: Legislation and policies; services and international representation, and initiatives that support the advancement of women.

Speaking at the session, Shaikh Mohammad said: “Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak [Chairperson of GWU and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood] is the inspiring and exemplary model for all women in the UAE. Her Highness is always keen on enhancing the role of women and their effective participation in building the nation, and my Emirati sisters are now reaping from the plant of the Founding Father Shaikh Zayed, who made women an influential partner and a crucial element of development.

“Today, we have adopted a large package of new policies and legislations for Emirati women as a culmination of their empowerment and leadership,” he said.

The Cabinet has advised studying increasing the involvement of women in judicial work at the level of federal courts. “Women are more than half of the society and the foundation of its renaissance. Women are the teachers, the doctors and the engineers. They are ministers, managers and judges and above the mothers of the next generations who build society and the nation,” Shaikh Mohammad said. The legislative package also included a proposal to issue the Federal Law on Combating Domestic Violence.

“Today we are embarking on a new phase in which we offer more initiatives that enhance the leading role of women in our society, and raise the rates of their participation and representation in all areas, locally, regionally and internationally,” Shaikh Mohammad said.

The focus of policies and legislation includes examining incentives to increase the participation of women in the business sector, including the development of the national policy on entrepreneurship for Emirati women
