Worst riots since 1968

Paris tourist sites reopened, workers cleaned up broken glass and shop owners tried to put the city on its feet again yesterday, a day after running battles between the yellow vests and riot police left dozens injured and caused widespread damage to the French capital. The man at the focus of protesters’ anger, President Emmanuel Macron, broke his silence to tweet his appreciation for the police overnight, but pressure mounted on him to propose new solutions to calm the anger dividing France. A spokesman said that Macron would address the nation early in the coming week. The weekend before, the French capital witnessed its worst unrest since the 1968 student riots. Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said there had been about 10,000 protesters in Paris by early evening and some 125,000 across the country.
