Banerjee stuns Mohnani for squash crown

Annual UAE National Day squash championships conclude

Sampuran Banerjee picked up a double as the UAE National Day Al Nasr Leisureland (ANL) Squash Championships concluded at the ANL squash courts.

Banerjee first dethroned three-time reigning champion Rahul Mohnani with a 3-1 win to clinch the Division 1 under-19 boys’ title and later took the boys’ under-17 crown with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Vikram Venkat.

Mohnani had won the under-19 boys’ title for the past three years. But this year he had to contend with the guile and shot-making of an improved Banerjee before going down in the final.

Division 2 also had its fair bit of surprises with Ishan Malani outplaying good friend Vishal Venkat in the final. Friends off court but adversaries on it, Malani outplayed Venkat using an array of calculated shots and win a tough final.

Division 3 category was also well fought with Amado Salvite beating Adnan Hassan, while Simran Makvana got the better of Mehr Narula for the girls under-14 crown.
