Southern Yemenis protest

About 30 southern Yemenis staged a protest outside the venue of UN peace talks in Rimbo demanding a referendum to restore independence, under the watchful eye of Swedish police.

Southern Yemen was an independent country until the 1990 unification. The south has long complained of neglect and marginalisation – grievances which did not disappear under Hadi, who is himself a southerner. Multiple protesters said they were seeking a referendum on southern independence and shouted “Free, free South Arabia” .
