New peace pact in Lebanon
1983 - Guns fell silent in central Lebanon and Beirut airport reopened after a new peace agreement was announced by opposition leaders. The first plane to use the airport in 16 days, a Middle East Airlines Boeing 707, took off for Dhahran with 28 passengers aboard. Fighting, which had been intense over the last few days, died away after officials of Druze leader Walid Junblatt’s Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) announced a new peace agreement.
