ow about withdrawing money from your bank account without depositing anything?

Sounds weird but a bank customer continued doing the same thing for well over two years in Bihar much to the shock of another customer.

This happened because the bank had issued the same bank account number to two customers with the same name.

According to a report, two customers with the same name, Sumitra Devi, reached the Barwal branch of the government-owned Central Bank of India in West Champaran district to open their bank accounts there. However, both the customers were issued the same account number by mistake.

Subsequently, the first customer, wife of Shiv Shankar Yadav, continued depositing her money with the bank account at repeated interval unmindful of the fact that the same account number was already operational with the bank in the name of another customer.

She deposited a total of Rs442,500 (Dh22,691) in the past two years.

On the other hand, another woman customer with the same name, wife of Vinod Chaurasia, was pleased to find that her account was getting cash and continued withdrawing.

She thought the cash may have been credited by the government as part of its various development schemes or it was the maturity amount of insurance policies.

The entire story came to light when the first customer reached the bank on Monday to get her bank passbook updated. She was shocked when her passbook showed a paltry Rs1,166 in her account.

“The customer who withdrew money from the account has agreed to return the money to the victim customer,” bank manager Basant Mahto said.
