Iran records highest daily death toll from coronaviru­s

Saudi Arabia reports 3,580 new cases taking total number of infections to 209,509

Iran recorded its highest number of deaths from Covid-19 within a 24-hour period, official health ministry figures showed yesterday.

The 163 deaths reported yesterday exceed the previous record from last Monday, when the health ministry reported 162 deaths in a day.

The country has recorded a total of 11,571 deaths and 240,438 infections from the coronaviru­s, health ministry spokeswoma­n Sima Sadat Lari said in a statement on state TV.

There have been 201,330 recoveries, she said.

The number of new daily infections and deaths has increased sharply in the last week following the gradual lifting of restrictio­ns that began in mid-April.

Iran yesterday instituted mandatory mask-wearing, even as its public increasing­ly shrugs off the danger of the Covid-19 illness it causes.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicised an image of himself in a mask in recent days, urging both public officials and the 80 million people to wear them to stop the virus’s spread.

Record number of cases

Morocco reported yesterday 698 infections, the highest one-day increase since the outbreak, with numerous cases discovered in a port city factory.

The new figures bring the official total to 14,215 infections and 235 deaths, according to the health ministry.

The majority of the new infections were detected in a fish canning factory in the southern port city of Safi.

Saudi Arabia reported 3,580 new cases bringing the total number of infections to 209,509, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday.

The ministry reported 1,980 recoveries yesterday, with total recoveries in the kingdom at 145,236. There are 2,283 cases in intensive care.

Qatar has reported 616 new cases, raising confirmed cases to 99,799, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Five new deaths were also confirmed, raising the death toll to 128 in the country.

573 new cases in Bahrain

Bahrain’s Ministry of Health has reported 573 new cases among foreign workers and some from recent arrivals to the island kingdom, according to health officials.

The ministry of health also confirmed that 735 patients recovered bringing the total to 23,318 so far.

Oman yesterday confirmed 1,072 new cases taking the overall infections to 46,178.

The latest cases, reported by the Omani news agency ONA, include 799 Omanis and 273 foreign residents.
