Man walks into police station, gets arrested for three-month-old crime

Policeman identifies man who had escaped after molesting woman

Aman who had fled the scene after molesting a woman three months ago was arrested when he walked into Al Muraqabbat Police Station for some work. In November last year, the 27-year-old Jordanian visitor allegedly touched a woman inappropri­ately in Al Muraqqabat area while she was waiting for her 22-year-old son outside a residentia­l building past midnight to go to the airport.

The 49-year-old Lebanese woman called Dubai Police, but the man managed to escape. Dubai Police identified the man after checking surveillan­ce cameras and he was put on the wanted list.

When he walked into the police station three months later, a policeman matched his picture with the one on the criminal records system and arrested him.

“It was 5am when he walked into the station. I discovered that he was wanted for a crime. He was immediatel­y arrested. I told the victim to come to the police station. She identified him in the suspects’ line three times,” t h e policeman said.

The woman had testified that the accused touched her breasts. “He offered me Dh2,000 to take him home. I asked him to leave, but he kept touching me and kept insisting that I take him to my apartment, but I refused and told him that I would call the police.” The Dubai Court of First Instance charged him with sexually abusing the victim. The next hearing will be on August 19.
