Abu Dhabi facility to treat rescued animals
One of region’s largest wildlife rehabilitation centre to have experts from 15 countries
The UAE will soon have one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the region following a partnership between the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) and The National Aquarium — the largest aquarium in the Middle East.
Located at Al Qana in Abu Dhabi, the centre will be staffed by veterinary and aquarist experts from 15 countries, and treat hundreds of rescued animals every year.
Maitha Hameli, specialist at EAD, said: “We are confident in the quality and readiness of the facilities at the rehabilitation centre. When a call came in regarding an endangered sea turtle, we conducted the rescue and carefully transported her to The National Aquarium’s rehabilitation facility for assessment.”
Beatriz Maquieira, curator at the National Aquarium, said: “We have an animal hospital, ICU, and rehabilitation rooms for both marine and small terrestrial animals.”
Anne Bourbon, manager of education and conservation at the National Aquarium, said the centre will give people a first hand perspective on the rescued animals.
