WINNERS AND HIGHEST RUN GETTERS
Not all prolific run-getters get the coveted title
The winner of the Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for becoming the top run getter of the tournament automatically becomes the finest T20 batsman of the year. This happens because IPL is the best T20 tournament in the world that is contested by the best.
SON OF SWAMPY
The first edition’s Orange Cap winner, Australia’s Shaun Marsh, surprised everyone. Despite missing the opening four games, he performed consistently as an opener for Kings XI Punjab and piled up 616 runs from the remaining 11 matches with one century and five half centuries. Nicknamed SOS (Son of Swampy) as his father Geoff Marsh was nicknamed Swampy, today he ranks 23rd among top run getters of the IPL.
PROLIFIC RUN-GETTERS WITHOUT THE CAP
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli, today tops the run getters list having piled up 5,412 runs from 177 matches; but only once, in 2016, did he win the Orange Cap when he piled up a whopping 973 runs from 16 matches. It’s surprising that Suresh Raina, the second highest run getter with 5,368 runs, or Rohit Sharma, third with 4,898 runs, have not won an Orange Cap.
