Judge suspended following scuffle

- BY ZUBAIR QURESHI Correspondent

Police booked Chaudhry Khurram, husband of Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) member of the provincial assembly (MPA) Abida Raja, while Additional Sessions Judge Malik Jahangir Awan was suspended following a scuffle between the pair at a petrol station.

According to details, the incident took place in the highly protected security zone of the federal capital.

CCTV footage showed two men approach the judge’s car and after a heated argument, they start fighting. Awan then shot at the two men in a bid to defend himself.

Initially, police were reluctant to register a case against the assailants but after the judge moved a petition in the court of another judge the police registered a criminal case and arrested a cousin of the woman MPA, Raja Khuuram.

Firing in Red Zone

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) while taking notice of the incident suspended the additional district & sessions judge for resorting to firing a weapon in the Red Zone.

The IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah during the hearing of another case referred to the incident saying everyone witnessed what happened in the Red Zone area.

No compromises

Justice Minallah said Islamabad was turning into a lawless city and no one bothered about its security.

The judge was told both the parties might have reached a compromise to which he remarked in civilised societies no such compromises take place.

Where shall the state figure and the responsibility of the state in such cases if parties reach compromise after breaking law, asked the IHC CJ.
