5 terrorists killed in intel-based operation in South Waziristan

Seven Pakistan Army soldiers lost their lives in an attack by terrorists in the northwestern region of South Waziristan bordering Afghanistan, the military said.

The Pakistan Army suffered one of its heaviest casualties in recent months during an intelligence-based operation in the Asman Manza area of South Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. At least five terrorists were killed as Pakistan’s military launched the operation at a militant hideout which triggered a gunfight.

Uptick in violence

The security forces cordoned off the area and conducted a search operation “to eliminate any other terrorists” found in the area, the Inter-Services Public Relations statement said.

The western border regions have witnessed an uptick in terrorist attacks on security forces in recent months.

The brutal attack comes after two Pakistan Army soldiers were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in North Waziristan.

In the first week of September, at least four Frontier Corps officials were killed and 21 others injured in a suicide attack on a convoy of paramilitary forces.

The official statement did not say which group was responsible for the attacks but the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan is suspected to be involved in the attack.
