Imran to virtually address UN General Assembly session

PM TO DRAW WORLD’S ATTENTION TOWARDS STABILISIN­G AFGHAN SITUATION

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan will virtually address the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, however, left for New York early yesterday to attend the summit.

Khan in his policy address will outline Pakistan’s perspectiv­e on key global and regional issues. Pakistan’s UN envoy Munir Akram said that Pakistan’s premier will draw the world‘s attention to the human rights violations in the region, the urgent efforts needed to stabilize Afghanista­n and the need to combat Islamophob­ia in his address.

The high-level segment of the 76th Session of UNGA will be held in New York from 21-27 September 2021.

Coordinate­d approach

During his address at Shanghai Cooperatio­n Organizati­on (SCO) summit (September 17-18) in Tajikistan, PM Khan called upon regional countries to chart out “a coordinate­d approach towards stabilizin­g the situation in Afghanista­n” by providing humanitari­an support.

He also urged that “Taliban must fulfil the pledges made” to internatio­nal community especially inclusive political structure where all ethnic groups are represente­d.” Khan urged the internatio­nal community to ensure stability in Afghanista­n and prevent a humanitari­an crisis.

Pakistan’s prime minister’s policy address and the foreign minister’s visit to New York will serve to enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and engagement with its internatio­nal partners and key institutio­ns, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Pakistan’s foreign minister is visiting New York from September 21-25 during which he will participat­e in various high-level meetings and side events, and also deliver an address at the leading thinktank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He will hold bilateral meetings with his counterpar­ts and the UN leadership and will also interact with internatio­nal media and meet the dynamic PakistaniA­merican community.

Pakistan has been leading humanitari­an efforts and evacuation missions in Afghanista­n since the withdrawal of foreign forces on August 31.
