Imran to virtually address UN General Assembly session
PM TO DRAW WORLD’S ATTENTION TOWARDS STABILISING AFGHAN SITUATION
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan will virtually address the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, however, left for New York early yesterday to attend the summit.
Khan in his policy address will outline Pakistan’s perspective on key global and regional issues. Pakistan’s UN envoy Munir Akram said that Pakistan’s premier will draw the world‘s attention to the human rights violations in the region, the urgent efforts needed to stabilize Afghanistan and the need to combat Islamophobia in his address.
The high-level segment of the 76th Session of UNGA will be held in New York from 21-27 September 2021.
Coordinated approach
During his address at Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit (September 17-18) in Tajikistan, PM Khan called upon regional countries to chart out “a coordinated approach towards stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan” by providing humanitarian support.
He also urged that “Taliban must fulfil the pledges made” to international community especially inclusive political structure where all ethnic groups are represented.” Khan urged the international community to ensure stability in Afghanistan and prevent a humanitarian crisis.
Pakistan’s prime minister’s policy address and the foreign minister’s visit to New York will serve to enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and engagement with its international partners and key institutions, the Foreign Office said in a statement.
Pakistan’s foreign minister is visiting New York from September 21-25 during which he will participate in various high-level meetings and side events, and also deliver an address at the leading thinktank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and the UN leadership and will also interact with international media and meet the dynamic PakistaniAmerican community.

Pakistan has been leading humanitarian efforts and evacuation missions in Afghanistan since the withdrawal of foreign forces on August 31.
