-

Egyptian police arrested the parents of a 12-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl in the latest case of child marriage, which sparked a social media uproar.

Photos of the engagement party, in a village near Giza Governorate which reportedly took place on September 17, went viral on social media. The celebration was cut short after security forces tracked down the family from the pictures.

Egypt has the 13th highest incidence of child marriage globally. While couples can only register for marriage when both are 18, the practice continues with unregistered marriages in a custom known as urfi.
