UN Security Council lifts Sudan sanctions

2001 - The United Nations Security Council voted to lift the largely symbolic sanctions against Sudan after the United States dropped its opposition to the five-year-old bans on diplomatic travel. The vote was 14-0 in favour with the United States abstaining rather than using its veto power to block the resolution. It expressed concern about human rights in Sudan although this was not covered in the UN resolution.
