Green Economy Summit takes off

- DUBAI Staff Report

Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, yesterday inaugurated the 7th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai. The two-day Summit is being organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, Expo 2020 Dubai.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA and Chairman of the World Green Economy Summit, said WGES 2021, is aligned with the Principles and Projects of the 50 which outline the UAE’s strategy to enhance its economic and social development over the next five decades, achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and transform the country into a green economy.

Climate change

Al Tayer said the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has highlighted the critical challenges the world faces today due to climate change and environmental damage, which have already resulted in wildfires, floods, and the accelerated melting of glaciers. No one can argue that the pledges made by countries at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 to reduce carbon emissions are enough to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
