- LAKHIMPUR KHERI

After being served a second notice, Ashish Mishra, son of central minister Ajay Mishra Teni and an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which agitating farmers were run over, appeared before the police yesterday to record his statement.

A large number of supporters of the accused also descended on the Crime Branch office in Lakhimpur Kheri where the interrogation of Ashish is ongoing. His lawyer, Awadhesh Singh, was also present along with Sadar legislator Yogesh Verma.

Heavy security has been deployed in and around the spot as the interrogation of Ashish proceeds. Barricades have been set up at each entry point to the area. Internet services have also been suspended.

A second notice sent by the police had asked Ashish to make an appearance yesterday after he failed to do so on Friday.

Warning of legal action

The notice also warned Ashish that if he failed to appear, necessary legal action would be initiated against him.

The second notice was issued after the state government had assured the Supreme Court that Ashish would appear before the police on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress

chief Navjot Singh Sidhu has begun a hunger strike at the Nighasan area residence of journalist Raman Kashyap, who was among those killed Lakhimpur Kheri, demanding the arrest of Ashish Mishra in connection with the Lakhimpur incident. Sidhu said, he would not end the hunger strike till the minister’s son was arrested.
