Prioritise your peace, that should be the key

Everyone went through something unpreceden­ted, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic (“World Mental Health Day 2021: Why we should ‘build back better’ from the pandemic”, Gulf News, October 10).

The mental health implicatio­ns are enormous; some have lost their jobs, some are trying to stay afloat, and others feel isolated, anxious, and alone. The importance of mental health and well-being can’t be ignored at any cost. Mental disorders can cause suffering and pose a risk of social isolation.

According to studies, about 50 per cent of people are diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime. People with mental health problems can experience discrimina­tion in all aspects of their lives. Fortunatel­y, most of these disorders have treatments. Health promotion about mental health disorders and their treatment must be conducted to increase positive perception­s.

As a society, all must understand the truths of those living with mental illness to replace stigma with hope and support, especially during Covid-19.

Now is the time for a change. People depend on each other for support and have a moral obligation to help each other. If someone opens up about their mental illness, listen and support them.

Even though it may seem hard for society to change, there is hope, and it starts with each one of us.

I think everyone is undergoing stress in their daily life. Some can tackle it, and others pile up their worries. Then they gradually enter into a stage where they might need medical help.

So the basic idea is to open up to your dear ones and find a solution. Experts say that leading quality time with your dear ones and finding a reason to motivate your passion can help anyone overcome stress.

Make sure that you’re regularly connecting with friends and family, even when your lives are busy. Attending social events and finding new hobbies that could help you meet new people can also help you better your mental health.

Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrat­e, sleep, and feel better.

Also, there’s nothing better than catching up with your friends, but that’s not always possible. You can also give them a call, drop a note, or chat with them online instead. Keep the lines of communicat­ion open.

Remember that we are not superhuman­s, and things always don’t go as planned, so don’t worry about it. Give yourself some ‘me time’. It’s healthier to accept that you are unique than to wish you were more like someone else. Feeling good about yourself boosts your confidence to learn new skills.

Visit new places and make new friends. Good self-esteem helps you cope when life takes a difficult turn. No matter what’s challengin­g you, don’t overthink it or overreact to it.

Find a balance. Just know that nothing is above your mental peace. That should be your priority.
