Mozambique president dies in plane crash
1986 - Mozambique President Samora Machel was killed when his plane crashed in a remote corner of South Africa while flying home from a summit of African leaders. South African authorities said 26 others, believed to include two Mozambican ministers, also died when the Soviet-built Turpolev jet ploughed into a hillside near the Mozambique and Swaziland borders. There were 10 survivors, including the Soviet pilot.
