EU forum puts women in centre stage

Political, business and social influencer­s stress gender balance

The European Union (EU) conducted a high-level global forum at Expo 2020 Dubai to accelerate women empowermen­t and discuss best policy practises to enhance women’s participat­ion in the labour market of the 21st century.

The meeting brought together distinguis­hed political, business and society leaders who are bringing about positive change in their communitie­s around the world. Several prominent government officials, business leaders, philanthro­pists, behavioura­l scientists and storytelle­rs highlighte­d the positive and multidimen­sional contributi­on of women to society. They also offered solutions to tackle gender-based discrimina­tion and the active role that men can play in championin­g gender equality.

The event was held in partnershi­p with the Embassies of Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the Commissari­at General of Italy for Expo 2020 Dubai and United Nations Women and hosted at the Women’s Pavilion by Expo 2020 Dubai in collaborat­ion with Cartier.

Array of speakers

Speakers at the forum included Andrea Matteo Fontana, EU Ambassador to the UAE; Mona Ghanim Al-Marri, Vice-President of the UAE Gender Balance Council; Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud, philanthro­pist and advocate for gender equality at Alwaleed Philanthro­pies; and Dr Mouza Al Shehhi, Director of UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC, among others.
