Tommy Fleetwood Academy at Jumeirah Golf Estates

‘DP World are definitely looking at growing the game more at grassroots’

- DUBAI BY HARRY GRIMSHAW Golf Editor

Englishman Tommy Fleetwood has announced the opening of his golf academy at Jumeirah Golf Estates in partnership with DP World.

The 31-year-old landed in Dubai on Monday morning straight of his sixth DP World Tour win coming at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.

“Yesterday [Sunday] was an amazing feeling, I guess what we practice and play for. I massively enjoyed playing on the back nine with a chance of winning, being in contention and a tournament filled with history, and then playing that last hole with the crowds, that was great and ultimately winning was a fantastic end to the week.

“Then it was a mad dash to get the flight and get here, and this is something that is very special to me being able to open the second Tommy Fleetwood Academy.

‘Amazing opportunity’

“An amazing opportunity with DP World and Jumeriah Golf Estates to try to bring the game to as many new faces as possible and help people progress and push themselves with the game of golf”.

Tommy’s first academy was opened in Southport, England in 2019 at Formby Hall. The venue where Tommy learnt the game under the instruction of his coach then Norman Marshal. When the idea came up to open his first academy Norman was given the reigns to run the academy thanks to his enthusiasm in letting the kids enjoy the game of golf.

Expansion drive

The success of the Southport academy then led to Tommy, the DP World and Jumeirah Golf Estates to join forces and expand Tommy’s vison to the UAE, a destination that Tommy now calls home.

“DP World are definitely looking at growing the game a lot more at grass roots in the UAE and we just happened to have a conversation about it and it just became this very

exciting opportunity that the second academy could bring the beliefs that I have to the game to the UAE.

“Let’s start at the grassroots and lets grow the game a bit more and like I say let’s get people excited about the game of golf, let’s get them enjoying it, let’s get them bringing their creativity out and let’s see how far we can take everyone.

‘I’m constantly learning’

“It’s a dream of mine to grow the game and I am continuously spending time around the game whether that be at the elite end playing in a Major or a Ryder Cup or whether that be playing with my kids here or at my home course.

“I’m constantly learning and the teams I have at the academies are just an amazing bunch of people that are going to spend their days bringing their knowledge to everyone as well. It’s just and exciting time and an amazing opportunity for everyone.”
